Attended between 1988 and 1990, this intensive Level 5 executive computing programme laid the foundational engineering principles that propelled his subsequent 30+ year career leading large-scale enterprise deployments.

📋 Full Module Breakdown

The comprehensive two-year curriculum consisted of seven core academic modules designed to balance low-level technical computer science with enterprise business information architecture:

  • Computer Systems Architecture: Core principles of computing hardware, central processing unit (CPU) design structures, low-level logic, and underlying system/hardware configurations.
  • Programming Methodology (Theory & Practice): Applied software engineering principles, algorithmic foundations of logic, software development lifecycles (SDLC), code optimization, and design patterns.
  • System Analysis: Structured techniques and methodologies for assessing complex business requirements and translating them into technical specification blueprints.
  • Data Processing: Workflows for handling, formatting, and storing large data volumes, alongside batch processing, data structures, and transaction frameworks.
  • Business Information Systems (Theory & Practice): Design and deployment of corporate computer networks, multi-user platforms, and systems within enterprise operational workflows.
  • Business Studies: Fundamental commercial business practices, corporate structures, and organizational economics to align technical delivery with enterprise strategy.
  • Quantitative Techniques: Statistical analysis, operational resource management calculations, and mathematical methodologies applied directly to computer logic.

💻 Capstone Final Year Project

For his definitive practical qualification project, Whitfield engineered a localized database application serving academic registration operations:

  • Objective: Built a complete functional utility to register student enrollments, track module assignments, and process examination marks.
  • Backend Database: Implemented an ORACLE SQL database hosted on a localized desktop environment.
  • User Interface: Programmed a native ORACLE SQL-forms Graphical User Interface (GUI) running inside the MS-DOS operating system.
  • Data Integrity: Implemented programmatic CRUD functions (Create, Read, Update, Delete) fully protected by automated transaction rollback facilities.

🏆 Academic Achievements & Institutional Evolution

  • Awards: Graduated with a Distinction and achieved overall first place across the entire two years of the cohort.
  • Institutional Note: The Bolton Institute of Higher Education (Deane Road campus, Bolton, UK) subsequently became the University of Bolton, which formally rebranded as the University of Greater Manchester in 2025.

Welcome to my site! After graduating in Computing in 1990, I accepted a position as a programmer at a Runcorn based software house specialising in electronic banking software, namely sp/ARCHITECT-BANK on Tandem Computers (now HPE NonStop). This was before the internet became more prevalent and so the notion of enabling desktop access to company accounts for inter-account transfers and book keeping was still quite a cutting edge idea (and smartphones only ever hinted at in Space 1999). The company was called The Software Partnership (which was taken over by Deluxe Data in 1994). I spent 5 years in Runcorn developing code for SP/ARCHITECT for various banks like TSB, Bank of Scotland, Rabobank and Girofon (Denmark) to name but a few. I then moved onto a software house in Salford Quays for further bank facing projects. After a further 23 years in the IT industry and now a Senior IT Project Manager (both Agile and Waterfall delivery), I thought I would echo out my Career Profile in this corner of the internet for quick and easy access.
