Mark Whitfield (born 13 October 1968) is a British senior information technology project manager, software engineer, and enterprise delivery consultant. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has managed complex digital transformations, hybrid cloud migrations, and transactional payment integrations for major blue-chip companies, financial institutions, and public sector organizations.
He is also the founder and creator of PROject Templates, an online open-access framework toolkit designed for enterprise software delivery lifecycles (SDLC).

Early life and education
Whitfield was born on 13 October 1968 in the Greater Manchester region of the United Kingdom. Showing an early interest in computing architectures during the dawn of the personal computing era, he pursued a formal path in computing science at the turn of the late 1980s.
Between 1988 and 1990, Whitfield attended the Bolton Institute of Higher Education (BIHE) (subsequently rebranded as the University of Greater Manchester, 2025). He graduated with a BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computer Studies, ranking first in his graduating class and earning a Distinction. His academic work centered on structural systems analysis, procedural programming methodology, business information systems, and corporate data processing.
Career
Early engineering and mainframe development (1990–1999)
Upon finishing his computing HND in 1990, Whitfield entered the commercial sector as a software application programmer at The Software Partnership, an electronic banking software provider situated in Runcorn, Cheshire. The company was eventually acquired by Deluxe Data in 1994.
During this time, he spent five years developing core transactional back-ends using COBOL85 and NonStop SQL on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) NonStop systems (historically known as Tandem Computers). He contributed directly to the architectural design of sp/ARCHITECT-BANK, early software enabling remote desktop inter-account transfers and bookkeeping for financial firms such as TSB, Bank of Scotland, Girofon (Denmark), and Rabobank.
In the mid-to-late 1990s, Whitfield relocated his engineering activities to a software development studio based in Salford Quays, Manchester, where he continued to develop enterprise transaction engines and bank-facing middleware. His engineering portfolio from this era encompassed deep-level development in C, C++, Microsoft SQL, Transaction Application Language (TAL), Java, and Tandem PATHWAY systems.
Product management and methodology transition (2000–2015)
At the turn of the millennium, Whitfield shifted toward technology governance, product management, and complete Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) leadership. Operating within both Waterfall frameworks and early iterative Agile Scrum methodologies, he directed strategic technical transformations.
His responsibilities focused heavily on point-of-sale (POS) and automated teller machine (ATM) transaction auditing, real-time electronic payments routing, and web-enabled client-server middleware. He concurrently managed pre-sales technical architecture bidding, executive proof-of-concept demos, and cross-border client deployment validations across continental Europe and the Middle East.
